Profile:
The University Maritime Platform at the University of Malta unites academics, researchers, and professionals working on marine and maritime issues. Established to foster collaboration, education, and innovation across disciplines, UMP acts as a national hub for maritime research, policy dialogue, and sustainable development.
As a cross- faculty initiative, UMP brings together expertise from engineering, marine science, law , logistics, economics, and sustainability. It supports research projects, develops new academic programmes, and connects students with the maritime industry through work-based learning and international cooperation. its activities aim to ensure that Malta remains at the forefront of global maritime knowledge and practice.
UMP organizes conferences, workshops, and seminars that attract both local and international participants. its flagship event, Innovation in Marine & Maritime Sustainable Developments, focuses on topics such as blue economy growth, green shipping, digitalization, and ocean governance. These Initiatives promote dialogue between academia, government, and private industry while helping to shape maritime policy.
Collaboration is central to UMP’s mission. The platform works closely with national bodies such as the Malta Maritime Forum, promoting knowledge exchange and aligning research with sector priorities. It also engages with EU- funded projects, marine observation platforms, and regional innovation networks.
Through its interdisciplinary structure and strategic outreach, the University Maritime Platform strengthen Malta’s reputation as a center for maritime learning and research excellence – supporting the country’s evolution as a sustainable knowledge – driven Maritime hub in the Mediterranean
