Profile:
The Malta Maritime Law Association (MMLA) is the leading
professional body representing maritime law practitioners
and stakeholders engaged with Malta’s shipping and
maritime sectors. Established to promote the development,
understanding, and sound application of maritime law, the
Association serves as a key reference point for legal expertise
within one of Europe’s foremost maritime jurisdictions.
MMLA brings together lawyers, academics, surveyors,
insurers, shipowners, managers, and other professionals
whose work intersects with maritime law and regulation.
Through this multidisciplinary membership, the Associationfosters informed dialogue on legal, regulatory, and commercial issues
affecting shipping, ports, yachting, and ancillary maritime services.
Its role extends beyond professional representation, contributing
meaningfully to the evolution of Malta’s maritime legal framework.
MMLA regularly engages with national authorities and international
counterparts, offering technical insight on proposed legal reforms and
regulatory initiatives. It also acts as Malta’s recognised affiliate to the
Comité Maritime International (CMI), ensuring that Maltese maritime
law remains aligned with international conventions and best practice.
The Association organises conferences, seminars, and lectures
addressing contemporary maritime legal issues, ranging from
ship finance and registration to environmental regulation,
decarbonisation, and emerging compliance requirements. These
events serve both to enhance professional competence and to
rightfully position Malta as a centre of maritime legal thought
Through its work, MMLA contributes to the continued strength
of Malta’s maritime sector by supporting a well-established
and informed legal framework. Its activities reflect the role of a
professional community that is closely engaged with the practical
realities of shipping and maritime commerce, and that remains
attentive to the standards and expectations shaping the sector at
both national and international level.
