Passenger / Car Ferry Services
Profile:Established in 1979, Gozo Channel is the state-owned maritime operator that provides the essential lifeline between Malta and Gozo. Operating roll-on/roll-off ferry services between Mġarr Harbor (Gozo) and Ċirkewwa (Malta), the company ensures seamless passenger and vehicle transport throughout the year, including peak holiday periods and night schedules.
The company is wholly owned by the Government of Malta and operates under a clear public service mandate. Guided by structured governance and regulatory oversight, Gozo Channel is tasked not only with delivering reliable connectivity but also with ensuring safety, efficiency, and value for the community. Its workforce of more than 200 professionals underpins daily operations, maintaining service levels that directly sustain Gozo’s economic and social fabric.
Gozo Channel’s fleet comprises the M.V. Ta’ Pinu, M.V. Gaudos, and M.V. Melita; all purpose-built ferries commissioned between 2000 and 2002 – alongside the M.V. Nikolaos, introduced in 2019 to manage peak seasonal demand. In 2024 the vessels carried about 6 million passengers and over two million vehicles, across over 35,000 crossings.
In line with Malta’s environmental commitments, the company has embarked on sustainability initiatives aimed at reducing its carbon footprint, exploring options for greener fuels and vessel upgrades.
The company is actively evaluating fleet renewal and service modernization strategies to meet evolving passenger volumes, rising environmental standards, and the long-term resilience of the Malta-Gozo link. In balancing its role as both a commercial operator and a public service provider, Gozo Channel remains central to Gozo’s accessibility, economy, and quality of life.
