Profile:
The Malta International Shipowners Association (MISA) is a voluntary not for profit organization set up in 2004 with the main objective of promoting the interests of Malta’s international shipping industry and further the reputation of the Malta Flag, whilst promoting and protecting the interests of its members both nationally and internationally.
MISA membership is open to companies which are owners or bareboat charterers of Maltese ships. It compliments registration under the Malta flag demonstrating a genuine link with Malta that goes beyond economic or operational necessity.
Current MISA member ships represent a substantial amount of tonnage of various types of ships registered in Malta operated by owners and operators from several countries. Thus, MISA provides a strong representation of the vessels that fly the Malta flag, including the diversity of the fleet and ownership.
The AGM elects an executive committee. The current President is Ms Marily Frangista, the Vice President is Dott Emanuele Grimaldi, and the Secretary/Treasurer is Dr John Coustas.
The Association is administered by a Secretariat based in Malta within the building of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry of which MISA is a corporate member, symbolic of the active genuine link owners and operators of Maltese ships have with the industry and the business community of the country whose flag their vessels fly. The MISA secretariat is led by General Secretary Dr Claudia Vella Casagrande, a lawyer, who for a number of years served at the Malta Permanent Representation to the European Union in Brussels and as a Director for Social, Fiscal and Legal Affairs at the European Community Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA).
MISA pursues its mission of promoting and safeguarding the legitimate interests of its members, at a national level through its close relations with the Maltese authorities (in Malta as well as its representations). and its engagement with national stakeholders, as well as at an international level, though its membership in the various regional and international shipowners’ associations and its participation at international events and meetings including.at EU, ILO and IMO.
International Representation:
MISA is a full member of the European Community Shipowners’ Association ( ECSA). MISA’s representatives on the ECSA Board of Directors are Ms Marily Frangista as Member, and Mr Filippos Lemos and Ms Claudia Vella Casagrande as alternate members. Mr Christian Cigrang, MISA Executive Committee member, Mr Christian Cigrang, is in his capacity outside MISA, also ECSA board member. MISA Vice President Dott Grimaldi and MISA executive committee member Mr Lyras, are both former ECSA Presidents.
MISA is also an affiliate member of the International Chamber of Shipping ( ICS). MISA’s Vice President Dott. Emmanuele Grimaldi is the current ICS Chairman, while MISA Executive Member Mr Metin Duzgit is ICS Vice Chairman. Mr John Lyras, MISA Executive Committee member, is in his capacity outside MISA, also an ICS Board Member.
Local Representation:
MISA is a corporate member of the Malta Chamber of Commerce, Enterprise and Industry, the Malta Maritime Forum (MMF), and the Malta Branch of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport.
